2003 Mumbai blasts accused get death sentence

August 6: A special POTA court in Mumbai has awarded death sentence to the three accused held guilty last week for the 2003 blasts that killed over 50 people.
This is the first time a husband and wife have been held guilty of terror activities in the country.
The court had held them guilty of conspiracy, murder and also under the prevention of terrorism act or POTA. This has been the biggest blasts case after the 1993 serial blasts trial and took six years to complete.
The special POTA judge M R Puranik had convicted Ashrat Ansari (32), Hanif Sayed Anees (46) and his wife Fehmida Sayed (43) last week for their role in carrying out the blasts in which 52 people were killed and 100 injured.
The convicts were also involved in placing an unexploded bomb in a bus at suburban SEEPZ on December 2, 2002, and another explosive device in a bus at Ghatkopar on July 28, 2003 in which two persons were killed due to the explosion.

Somdev Devvarman beats Marin Cilic

Aug 5: Somdev Devvarman registered the biggest win of his fledgling career when the wiry Indian upstaged sixth seeded Marin Cilic in straight sets in the second round of the USD 1.4 million Legg Mason Tennis Classic in Washington.
The Indian qualifier, who lost to Cilic in his maiden ATP final in the Chennai Open earlier this year, took one hour and 42 minutes to sent the Croatian packing 7-5, 6-4 to reach the third round where he would meet either the big-hitting Croatian Ivo Karlovic or German Raine Scheuttler.
"It's definitely the biggest win of my career. He's a great player. He's in top 15 already and on his way to the top 10," Somdev gushed after the win.
"All along I played well. My plan was to compete as hard as possible. I took my chance and I'm proud of the result," said Somdev who saved five of the seven break points that his opponent had.
Cilic had ended Somdev's dream run in January in Chennai, where the 24-year-old had reached his first ATP final with wins over players like Carlos Moya and Ivo Karlovic.
Somdev said he did not have any butterflies in the stomach in the second round match and neither was he out to settle an old score. "It wasn't my first Tour final tonight so I wasn't as nervous going out," said the 153rd-ranked Indian.

BMW catches fire in Ahmedabad; four die

August 1, 2009 In a tragic accident in Ahemdabad, four people were burnt to death as the BMW they were travelling in, caught fire.
The four people, reportedly all mechanics of BMW, had taken a new car for a test drive when it caught fire after ramming into a trailer.
It appears the car's central locking system failed and all four got trapped inside the car. Three hours of operation by a large team of fire officials finally managed to take out the charred remains of the four people.
Sources said the four occupant of the car were employees of Parsoli Motors, the BMW dealership in the city. They were on a test drive of the vehicle, which had come to Parsoli’s workshop for repairs and service.
Police said the accident took place around 6.30 pm near Ognaj. The four occupants could not escape and got burnt to death as the car doors got locked automatically and had jammed.
BMW officials say that they have never heard of any BMW go up in flames like this.

Honda recalls 440,000 cars for airbag risk

DETROIT: Honda Motor Co said on Friday that it is recalling another 440,000 vehicles - including some of its best-selling Accord and Civic models - for a potentially lethal airbag defect.
Honda said that the airbag inflators in some of its top-selling sedans can rupture because of too much air pressure causing metal fragments to shoot through the airbag and strike vehicle occupants.
One fatality and a number of injuries have been linked to the defect, Honda spokesman Sage Marie said.
The recall covers certain 2001 and 2002 Accords, 2001 Civics and some 2002 and 2003 model Acura TL sedans. The driver's side airbag is the defective component on the affected vehicles. Honda said owners of those models can check to see if their vehicle is covered by the recall by checking the automaker's website at www.owners.honda.com/recalls.
The Japanese automaker said it was encouraging owners to wait until they received a recall notice to go to a dealership and have the inflator for the steering-wheel airbag replaced.
Honda had originally announced that it would recall some 2001 Accord and Civic sedans for the defect last November. The notice issued on Friday added another 440,000 vehicles to the recall.
